Medium textured, largely silt-sand with some clay, on sandstone and calcareous marl.

Produced only in exceptional growing years, this Riserva is considered by San Felice to be the finest expression of its Campogiovanni terroir. Carefully-selected clusters of Sangiovese Grosso from its 2.5-hectare Il Quercione vineyard yield a wine that effortlessly marries together depth, elegance, and authenticity of style, plus a remarkable capacity for lengthy ageing.

Production takes place in the San Felice estate cellars. Vinification is in temperature-controlled tanks, where the crushed fruit, complete with the skins, seeds, and stem (called grape must), is pumped over and punched down, this maximises the extraction of desirable components from the skins. Fining is in barrels and tonneaux, this is an exceptionally complex process, and ensures a perfect balance between Sangiovese and the soil-related characteristics. In accordance with DOCG regulations our Brunello di Montalcino is aged for at least two years in oak barrels. The maturing process is completed by a period of fining in the bottle.

Winter was quite mild and rainy; elevated temperatures at the beginning of April have caused an early flowering of at least 10 days; after a regular May, the summer months were very hot, with temperatures high above seasonal average, with periodic rains that helped to maintain a good vegetative balance avoiding water distress. The ripening of the grapes was very good as well as the average quality of the wines produced.

2015 will be remembered as one of the warmest in recent years; to a mild winter and a spring with regular rainfall, succeeded a hot summer with rare precipitations. Good weather conditions allowed a good quantity and excellent quality production, with perfect phenolic maturation in all vineyards, guaranteeing wines suitable for long aging.

Cooler than previous year, with abundant rainfall in winter and spring that caused a slight delay in flowering of the vines; temperatures above average in early July favored the recovery conditions and maturation continued gradually, in line with the average seasonal temperatures in the months of August and September; excellent quality of the grapes, rich in aromatic substances and polyphenols with ideal values.

Mild and rainy end of winter and anticipated spring with temperatures above seasonal average. Generous rainfalls at the end of May and beginning of June assured a good supply of water to the vines; high temperatures during summer allowed a perfect ripening of grapes ensuring an excellent harvest as for quality ; quantities instead suffered a reduction of 10% compared to previous years.
